This sounds a lot like what I've been seeing in the Windows world... CRS.EXE appears to be running fine, but it is in some goofy state where it doesn't respond to stimuli. v7.03 in my case.
When I try to kill it, I get a 1053 or 1054 pipe has been ended message (or something along those lines) and the service does stop.
I posted that in a thread here a while back... or maybe on the support forum.
