There is a workaround if you want to pony up for a 3rd-party restore tool.
What we do, since our Exchange guys don't like the idea of restores into the production environment, is have a standalone dedicated virtual Exchange restore server. I take the backups as a straight file-level backup with DP 8 (since I found out the hard way that W2012R2 + Exch 2013 ISN'T supported by 8.x) and restore them to this special server. Then I use a 3rd-party tool to read in the info store in question and grab what we need.
Works like a champ - though I'm really getting peeved about the licensing costs on the 3rdparty tool in question.
