The main difference between web plugin and the VMware gre agent is that the web pluin is configured on your virtual centre one install accessible from all your clients with access to the VMware web console. If installed correctly the dp plugin will appear under the managed tab of a vim which has been backed up. The gre agent requires the VMware thick client to be installed which will only be accessible to the users of that install. The Web plugin is tricky to install if you have firewalls in between cell manager / installation server.
