Re: Enhanced Incremental

I have the same problem, the full backup had the "Enhanced incremental backup" option enabled and completed OK but the subsequent bakcups (Incr1 is the type) display the message:

"Missing Enhanced Incremental full backup for
    WinFS xyz.mydomain.local:".
Incremental backup will not run in the enhanced mode until
    a full backup is performed."

Version 7.0 with all patches installed (Internal Version 105).

Any help will be appreciated!

Re: Backup Virtual machine Snapshot

If you want to be able to run incremental/differential backups and depending on option selected :
- SIngle : it will be possible to run full->incr->incr ... or full->diff->diff->diff ...
If you select this snapshot behavior, VEAgent will have to leave one snapshot on virtual machine to be able

to run incr/diff session with next backup
- Mixed : it will be possible to run full->incr->diff->diff->incr ... (every combination of full/incr/diff backups).

If you select this snapshot behavior, VEAgent will have to leave two snapshots on virtual machine to be able to run

   different chains of backups.

There was a problem with removing snapshots and it was solved in one TM/patch.

Recommandation :
If you do not want to leave snapshots on virtual machine and still be able to run full/inc/diff chains, use changed block tracking. This is much better method than using snapshot method. There is a lot of benefits of this method :
* Snapshots are not needed for incr/diff backups -> automatically means less snapshots on vCenter/ESXi leaving more space on datastores and better vCenter/ESXi
* Less space needed on backup host to backup virtual machine

* Faster backups

Using change block tracking is something we recommend to all our customers and I belive it will be default behavior in one of the next releases.

I think that vddk5.5.4 which supports vSphere6.0 will be added in DP9.04. Only limitation will be that new features of vSphere6.0 will not be supported.

DP 9.01 Shadow Copies and Media Agent Time out

$

Hello All,

I must be missing something simple here so I thought to reach out to you all.

I have just moved a clustered 2012 R2 file server from DP 7.0 to DP 9.01 and I can perform single file system backups without issues and the Shadow Copy Option is enabled by default.

This file server has 14 file systems on it and 9 needs to be backed up.  Of these 9, five complete without issues but the SAME 4 have failed each day with the MEDIA agent timing out after 140 minutes (8400 seconds).  If I wait for the backup to complete and try a "restart failed objects", they fail.

If I take one of these file systems and create a new backup with just that file system in it, it works OK (well, it does for the smallest file system of the four (900GB) - the others are too large to "test" during the day)

Looking in the event log on the server shows nothing of note, DP just says that it's taking a snapshot followed by the BMA aborting 140 minutes later.  The original DP7 backup went to tape but this one goes to a StoreOnce 4700 Catalyst store - we see no errors related to this device.

Couple of other points

i) This server was being backed up by DP7 using Shadow Copy Services without issue including the file systems that fail.

II) We failed over the resources to another node in the Cluster that has more memory in it just in case we were running out - The same four file system failed!

I suspect this needs the complete debugs collected and sending to Support for analysis to get to the bottom of what is happening.  My guess is that the disk agent is not sending data to the media  agent in time but I can't work out why not.

Any ideas though before I contact Support?

Cheers

Mark

First, I advise that you look at the Admin Guide.  In the GUI< click Help -> Guides, Backup is in Chapter 5

Very briefly, open the Backup cpntext, expand Backup specificatios, right-click on File System, and pick 'Add Backup'

Expand any hostnames you want to backup, and put check marks next to any file systems you want to backup.  Each file system (DP calls them 'Objects') can be expanded to backup sub-folders and individual files

Select you devide as you normally would, select options, schedule the backup and save it.  Do not leave any 'spaces' when saving the Backup specification

Chances are that you need to implement KeepAlive on your Disk Agents and Media Agents, this susally rsolves thsi problem for my customers.  See attachments

Thanks Bob.

As a go for tonight, we have split the backup into seperate file systems and scheduled them for different times to "spread any load" just in case this is causing the issue.

I will have a look at the docs you have provided though and see if I can get this back to a single datalist for this server.

Cheers

Mark

I can only repeat what Bob has stated, but for now, I'd stick with using tape drives until you are confortable with the concepts.

When you get to using Catalyst, it will be faster than you expect even over Ethernet (Are you not aware that Catalyst is available over Fibre as well if you use StoreOnce firmware 3.12 and DP 9?)  but there are lots of things you need to understand to get the very best from it and I feel you need to start with simple backups before using Catalyst.

If you are going to use Catalyst, then please read my previous post with regards to Data Protector 9.02 and Catalyst.

This is a very old post (originally from 2012) and as far as I recall, DP 6.11 is no longer supported.  I'd suggest seeing if you can upgrade to DP 7.03  as long as it still supports your applicaitons that is....

Are these using the same datalist or did you have one for the Full backup and another for the Incremental?

If you are using two lists (Different retention for the backups can be handled by the schedule and therefore requires only one datalist for daily, weekly and monthly.) then the reason could be the following:

1) Check the "Description" field on the options tab

and

2) Make sure that the datalist owners are the same

If you are using just the one datalist, has anyone changed the above two items between runs or have you started the the incremental from the GUI with no owner being set on the datalist i.e. DP can't find a full backup and therefore switches to a Full backup.

You can do trans log if SQL Server has Recovery Model option set to Bulk-Logged or Full. Otherwise it will do a differential or full backup. M.

Thank you for answer, unfortunately version of StoreOnce firmware <3 .12.

i think do backup on tapes

StoreOnce firmware 3.12 is due for general release soon so keep an eye out for it as it gives you some very cool features including Catalyst over Fibre.

As for where to store your data, I'd ALWAYS go for Catalyst over a StoreOnce VTL - it's much quicker, simpler to administer and is better integrated with DP.  Using DP and Object copies, you can then take a backup from the Catalyst store to physical tape if required for longer retention or off-site requirements.

DP RMAN Integration problem with Oracle 11g

$

Hello,

I have a problem with DP 7.2 when using the plugin for the oracle integration.

The plugin works fine with oracle 10g but now we are trying to take a hot backup of a 11g instance located on a RH Linux server.

the error that DP is displaying when configuring the backup is  an 12:8019

with description:

target Database role could not be determined.

APPERROR:

SELECT V$ASM_DISKGROUP.NAME, V$ASM_DISK.PATH

Now I am wondering if the problem is on DP or on RMAN/DB side because the DB is not using the ASM filesystem (is using simple linux ext4 fs)

Has anyone a clue?

Thanks
