It is possible torestore avirtualmachine to adifferent server?

The ideais to put themachines inthestorageand then pass itto anotherclusterofhyper-v, I soundweird butthat's whatthe customer wants.

I am pretty sure that these files are created by VMware, and are not a function of Data Protector.  When I am working a VMware problem, I am, like you, finding these files in different places, although always in

            C:\Windows\TEMP\vmware-SYSTEM

This is why I said 'for example', and the best way to find these files is probably be doing a search for '.lck'

I would need to know what version of Data Protector that you are running

I found a similiar, but not identical issue in a lab case:

[Warning] From: BSM@[deleted]">BSM@[deleted] "XYZ_SQL_PROD"  Time: 11/11/2013 2:15:20 PM
Got error: "Store does not exist." when contacting "XYZDS01" B2D device!

[Warning] From: BSM@[deleted]">BSM@[deleted] "XYZ_SQL_PROD"  Time: 11/11/2013 2:15:21 PM
There are no available connections on store 'XYZDS01' (through gateway 'XYZDS01_ss').

The CM was upgraded to patch bundle 703 to resolve several issues.
Now most backups fail to connect to their respective SW deduplication store

DP 7.03 uses an upgraded Catalyst version (v5), which is not compatible with previous versions.

StoreOnceSoftware (SOS) servers, gateways and cell manager must be patched to DP 7.03, other they will not be inter-operable.

SOS services must be restarted after applying 7.03.

=============

There was another occurrance of this error with DP 8.1, but, this is currently unresolved

In your session report, I saw no mention of 'no hyper-v machine'

I also reviewed the documentation, and saw no mention of whether restoring to a different Hyper-V cluster

So, it looks like this is going to have to go to the Response Center.

However, I will reach out to someone in Engineering who has done a lot of Hyper-V cases, and get his opinion on this, and pass it along to you

At teh command prompt on the Media Agent 'rocsrv', run the command

        devbra -dev

Normally, this will output fields for Tape Drives 'Tape' and the robotics 'Exch' similiar to this:

Tape    HP:Ultrium 3-SCSI  Path: "/dev/rmt/0mn"  SN: "HU10938F7R"
        Description: HP LTO3 Drive
Revision: D23W  Device type: lto [13]  Flags: 0x0001

Exch    HP:1x8 G2 AUTOLDR  Path: "/dev/rac/c0t4d1"  SN: "MXA94210HN"
Description: HP StorageWorks 1x8 Cartridge Autoloader
        Revision: 2.80  Flags: 0x0006  Slots: 7  Drives: 1
        Drive(s) SN:
                "HU10938F7R"

I think that, when you run this command, you will be missing the' Exch' field, or, if it is ther, you will see a lot of 'N/A' entries

If your media agent is HPUX, run an

            ioscan -fn

and look for any 'Autoch' types.  If the media agent is Windows, go to the Devcie Manager, and see if you see any Media Changers

Tis may require a system reboot on either type of server to go out and idnetify SCSI-attached devices

If you are in a SAN, make sure that your zoning is correct

This may also be a problm with physical connections (cables, SCSI-intderfaces, terminators) between the server and the Tape library

'devbra' is your friend

Hi bob,

Is the same support matrix for DP 8 , 8,01 and 8,1, I search on HP Software Product Manuals and only show for DP 8.

Regards.

Yes, I believe it is the same for 8.0 and 8.1.  Any additions to the support matrix can be found in the Product Announcements Guide for each version

DP 8.01 is a patch bundle, so, the patch description would need to be reviewed to see if support for any additional platforms was added

Granular Recovery Extension Error

Hey guys,

I have a restore to do and I was attempting to use the VMware GRE. I went to my vm and found the version I wanted to restore and submitted it for restore. When I went into the HP Data Protector (Admin) section to approve and start the restore I recieved this message. I have created a ticket with HP but I was looking for a little bit more immediate assistance. Has anyone seen this error before?

Re: Granular Recovery Extension Error

Disregard. Issue is resolved. I needed a high capacity drive attached so I carved off some space from our SAN last week. I added a 2 TB LUN to assist with a restore. I added the LUN as a drive to the Windows Server and then created a staging area for Data Protector restores on the drive. I restored the information then removed the drive and LUN. I however, neglected to remove the temporary staging space from the Data Protector (Admin) settings in vCenter which is why the message was appearing. Once I went into settings and removed the no longer existing drive, the restore ability was enabled again. Sorry for the bother.

Thanks very much for the reply, got most of my questions answered and will continue to test :)

If anyone has any ideas about the other unknowns let me know thanks!

The 'standalone.xml' file is supposed to be created in the folder

Program Data -> Omniback -> Config -> Server -> AppServer

of the jboss application server, which, if I read the documentation correctly, is also the Cell Manager.  Just to be thorough, please check this folder, and make sure that the file is not there.  If you do find it, I'll send more Trouble-shooting steps, because Trouble-shooting involves editing the 'standalone.xml' file

Did you get any errors in the Application Eent log on the cell manager that correspond to this error?

What happens, when you see the message "Press any key to continue . . ." and you press any key?

I found nothing for any lab cases that may have reported this problem, so, if the file 'standalone.xml' file does not exist, you will need to open a case with the Response Center

Re: Import medium

You use Import Catalog when the media in question is in your Internal Database

You use Import when the media is NOT in the Internal database

Import generally does a more complete job, but you have to import the media in the same order it was used for back up. This can be obtained from the 'media.log' file, or by running

omnidb -session [session_id] -media          Do not include the [   ] marks

If using Import Catalog, the order of the Import is not important

I generally prefer using the method of Exporting the media, and Importing it again

After Importing Media, especially if session protection has expired, get the Session_id of the Imported session, go to the Internal Database context of the GUI, expand session, find the session you just Imported, right-click on it and set Protection, I would recommend to Permanent, or, at least for a long time so Daily Maintenance does not delete the Catalog

Try to avoid importing at close to Noon, when Daily Maintenance is due to run

I got this answer back from a mamber of the Engineering group

============

I know that some customers have attempted Exchange restores with tapeanalyzer (as 1 example), but at a hyperv perspective, I never attempted to restore without having a vepa (Hyperv agent) initiate, connect to a hyperv subsystem and actually restore

So is it possible, possible yes …but never tried it, would have to research it further..that is, assuming that the restore (restoring vm’s without vepa initialization) is even supported.

--------------

So, the answer is, it has never been tried, and we  don't knwo if it will work.  Perhaps someone else out there has tried this, and can either say yea or no

Also -- I noticed you said never to use software compression. Is there any reason not to use Hardware compression paired with Drive Based Encryption?
