VEPA: how to select backup objects based on wildcards?

$
0
0

We take backups of about 150 virtual Windows machines, for which we use VEPA integrations.

Selecting which machines to backup is straightforward, ask the vCenter server what virtual machines there are in the environment and back them up.

Three backup specs. have been setup, based on the three VMware resource pools  that can be seen in our VMware environment (managed by another team).

Problem is that two of the resource groups are small and one is very large.

For finetuning the load across VEPA agents and VLS’s, this is not desirable.

We would like to build backup specs. based on the use of wildcards. Let us say we have servers in the name range from srvr001 to srvr999.

Using wildcards, we would like to setup backup specs. like srvr0*, srvr1* and so on.

That way we would be able to differentiate more and balance the load over more servers running the VEPA agent.

Using wildcards cannot be accomplished through the DP GUI.

But as we all know, underlying the GUI there are plain text files that are used for building backup specs. (<disk>:\Program Files\OmniBack\Config\Server\BarLists\VEAgent).  We have been experimenting with the “path” parameter within these files, to select servers based on wildcards but to no avail.

Has anyone been able to get this to work (selecting based on wildcards) or  is this simply not possible? (We know Veeam can ;-)

Schedule Job via DP runs into Timeout. But which timeout?

Hi, i want schedule a Database Job via HP-DP. I´ll get the following error message during the job.

I´ve posted every 10 minutes a command "...in progress" to prevent the ScriptoutputTimeout.

The default settings of this option in global conf are 15 minutes.

My question: Which timeout i have to change to prevent stopping this job without affecting my dayli backup jobs.

Dear Friends,

Before doing the other soultions, just restart the HP data protector system and  error giving  server. It is worked for me.

Thanks and regards

Hi,

The problem is fixed after changing the DNS server IP address to new one  in /etc/resolv.conf. As network team recently changed the DNS server IP address.

Thanks,

Narendra

Bob_Clark - Thank you for the detailed response.  It helps give me a good path and some safety precautions.  Since I am using a whole new server the original would stay in tact if for some reason I had issues.  But good to have backups also.  Thanks again - I will be trying it in a few days!

maybe the problem is because of the write error message you get.  i think there has been some post about the problem already but not sure. otherwise you can open a dp support case, maybe they can give you a solution

if you have a look in the IDB for the full backup job and check the "Catalog Protecton" and "Data Protection" column, what does it say?

Re: Full backup information is "forgotten"

Thanks for reply,

Both are protected. I checked every full backup since January, catalog and data are protected correctly.

I can restore from the full backups past January, just the incremental backups are relating to the old full not the current ones.

strange behaviour. have seen this when you have seperate jobs for full and inc backup. but as far as i understood, you have one selection list with two schedules (one for full, one for inc)

What comes in mind:

- have you set the job "public"?

- have you tried to create the job new?

- did you check that your IDB has enough free space (DCBF, Fnames and so one)?

otherwise is suggest you open an case

Hi,

Yes, 1 datalist running in full  + incremental.

Enough space in IDB.

What I see, the job was not set to Public, I set it now. However all other backups have the same settitng and work (not public).

Thanks for this, I will run a full backup with this public setting and get back to you.

The only thing that comes to mind is that your SAID (Support Agreement ID) may not be linked to Data Protector when you log into the SSO site.  This is a public forum, so, you would not necessarily need to have a linked SAID to get into this Forum.  We are only allowing folks with valid SAIDs to download things like patches

If you have a SAID for Data Protector support, add it to your Profile

You may download a copy of DP 8.1 from the site

   http:/www.hp.com/go/dataprotector

and clicking on the down-arrow next to Trials and Demos.  This is a full version of DP 8.1 except for Licensing

You are talking about 3 different things here

  -   prevent the ScriptoutputTimeout.

The default settings of this option in global conf are 15 minutes

You correctly identified this as being in the 'global' file.  This timeout is used when running pre-exec or post-exec scripts, and the 15 minute default timeout is not enough to allow the script to finish.  I suggest that you run the script in stand-alone mode, aoutside of DP, and see how long it takes.  Then, in the 'global' file, find the line

# ScriptOutputTimeout=TimeoutInMinutes

make a copy of the line, edit one of the lines to remove the # sign and the 'space' that follows, and set it to the value you want, for example, to increase the timeout to 30 minutes

ScriptOutputTimeout=30

# ScriptOutputTimeout=TimeoutInMinutes

Save the file, stop and restart DP

=================

[61:1002]  The BMA named "ORA_BACKUP_2" on host ux-rbg11.xxxxxxxxx.com

reached its inactivity timeout of 8400 seconds.

Tis can usually be reolved by implementing KeepAlive on the server giving the error, in your case 'ux-rbg11'.  I wrote several support tips on implementing KeepAlive on different platforms, you may be able to find one that is appropriate for you by searching the forum for 'KeepAlive'.  Let me know if you can't find it, and I will send you a copy

I would really suggest that you implement KeepAlive on servers pro-actively, but, at least, I woudl do it also on any disk agents involved with this backup

================

[61:1002]  The VBDA named "Database Validation EADP" on host lnx-rbg01.xxxxxxxx.com

reached its inactivity timeout of 300 seconds.

If this is from the same session as the previous error, it may straighten itself out once you get KeepAlive implemented, and are no longer getting the 8400 second MA timeout.  However, if not, again, in the 'global' file, find this line

# SmPeerID=WaitForInMinutes

# default: 5 minutes

Edit as before, set the value to no more than 15 minutes, but, it will probably need a lot less than that

For ordinary file system backups, you can do this within Objects by goig gto Properties of each object and ussing 'Trees/Filters'.  I see nothing resembling this for Virtual machines, and I don't think that this will be possible,

Maybe, someone out there can prove me wrong

User who is a member of "Administrators" group can install SEM. To avoid any security issues related wtih installtion, right click on setup file and select " run as administrator".  Microsoft recommends to install package in non-System protected folder (atleast files which are constantly being changed should not be a part of System protected folder i.e. Programe Files )

well normaly the "public" setting is used when you have two different jobs. one for full, and one for inc. But it is worth a try. otherwise try to recreate the job. if this does not help, i would suggest you open a case.

Hello,

I update the message for those one who encounter the same problem.

I don't know why this issue occur but i have the way to correct it:

The solution is to move the tape in a non freepool pool, recycle the tape (right click/recycle, the order number appear) and move the tape to the freepool back.

The tape will be usable again.

I hope it will help somebody

You are right it's Windows issue.
Use this keys:
To remove an orphaned UpdateExeVolatile registry key value

Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\

In the right navigation pane, double-click the UpdateExeVolatile key.

Configure the key with a value of 0

Close Registry Editor.

To delete the orphaned PendingFileRenameOperations registry key

Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.

Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\

In the right navigation pane, right-click the PendingFileRenameOperations key and select Delete.

Close Registry Editor.
