import of catalog fails with "invalid detail catalog received from media agent"

Using dp 6.2 with patches. Trying to import a 4 yr old tape (which was made on another server/core/tape-drive(lto4) and obviously an earlier version of data protector), using a DP 6.2 core and lto5 tape-drive.  The import does eventually finish, and it does build the log of the original backup. I need to use this tape to do an exchange restore,  but it does not work, giving errors pertaining to the catalog. I have ran dbutilcheck -extended on the database, and said everything was O.K.

Any help will be appreciated.

We're encountering the same problem.  Looks like it's a session global parameter, just not sure which one.  Monitoring the esxi host, it takes a few minutes to build the new snapshots but DP SM just times out after what looks like one of the 30 second defaults.

Have you heard anything back from HP?

Difference in orginal data and backedup data

Hi All,

I use HPDP 6.21.

For few servers I see huge difference in actual data(data in server) and backedup data.

For example: my drive size is 44GB but when I check the "Internal Database" properties it shows as 91 GB.

Any suggestions on why this happens and how to over come this would be lot lot helpful.

Thanks

Filesystem backup error: Bad catalog access for message #1033 in set 80

Hi all,

Using DP 6.2 on a w2k3sp2 hp proliant server

had an error last night on a file system backup not previously seen:

Bad catalog access for message #1033 in set 80

This caused a subsequent:

Connection to Media Agent broken => aborting.

and a drive on a w2k3 vm server to fail.

Did a bit of digging and the best I could find was this:

http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Data-Protector-Support-and-News/bad-catalog-access-for-message-102/td-p/4345320

Searched for omni.cat and found it in a location on the cell manager where it doesn't appear to be in use:

(Data Drive) \DP_Software\HP_DP_6.11_for_Windows_Netware_Media_Operations_B6960_15007_01_fixed\B6960-15007-01\NetWare\NetWare4-6\nls\C

I'm not sure if it is an issue with omni.cat I could be on the wrong track altogether. Could it be a tape issue or a catalog full or corrupt or something else?

All contributions greatly welcomed as per usual,

thanks,

Steven

VDBA Timeouts for no apparent reason

Hi all,

I had numerous filesystem failures two nights ago with several drives on vm servers giving "The VBDA named "C:" on host vmxx.xxx.net
reached its inactivity timeout of 7200 seconds.
The agent on host will be shutdown.

Followed some hours later by:

[Critical] From: BMA@xxxxx.net "(x)"  Time: 23/07/2013 02:16:13
Bad message format

and:

Cannot connect to Media Agent on system xxxxx.net, port (xx) (IPC Cannot Connect) => aborting.

[Critical] From: VBDA@xxxxxx "C:"  Time: 23/07/2013 02:16:51
Unexpected close reading NET message => aborting.

and:

IPC failure reading NETIO message (IPC Write Error
System error: [10053] Software caused connection abort
) => aborting

It all looks very serious and as I say I had numerous failures. I did an L&TT test on the drive which came back clean. I checked events on the cell manager and no issues were reported and also there were no network issues at the time.

The re-run of failed backups the morning after or the next nights had no such problems.

Could anyone point me in the right direction of what I should be looking at here?

any contributions much appreciated as usual,

thanks,

Steven

dp foreign media

My group had dp5.5 on a older system conencted to the msl6000,  we now have a new system setup with dp8 conencted to the same msl6000.  In order to use the previously used tapes from dp5.5 with dp8, does dp8 have import each and every tape?

Its a painfully slow process and its not feasible to purchase new media.  This is what I have read on other threads, is this correct?  I also can not format the media because its foreign!!!

Hi,

there is no other option apart from performing an Import. I understand its a slow process. There is no difference in backups. But still if you want to transfer all content info from the old cartridges. The only way is the perform Import.

I guess you can perform a Mass import (if DP has any such options)

KK

I wish there was a nass import, but every tape in teh library has teo be loaded into a drive, we have 4 drives, so I can at least do 4 tapes at a time.  But its SLOW!!!  I have had a few that after the import they are still labled as DP Foreign.

Hello,

I asked a collegue of mine aout your question.

If you do not care about the data on the tapes you should be able to do a format with the "force" option, this will ignore any previous headers written on the tape.  Again, this will destroy any existing data on the tapes!

If you need the data on the tapes there are a couple of options.

1.  As the other poster stated you can import the media as you are doing.

2.  If you could upgrade the old system to at least DP 6.11, then you could use the -copy_to_mcf and -import_from_mcf options with omnimm (MCF - Media Catalog File) as I believe the mcf options started with DP 6.11.

Simple question - How do you get the full tape name to show in DP i.e. 123456"L4"

as the subject says

I'm mainly after it showing what LTO type the tape is as well

Try  omnimm -report media_list -tab

This will tell you how DP is recognizing the Tapes. If they come up with proper full label. Then re-run inventory and check.

I have exactly the same problem.

Exchange Server 2007 with DP 6.20.

You can easily go to your Exchange Server -> Task Manager -> End the process mbx_bar.exe.

Restart the backup on DP Server and everything will be fine.

Good luck!

Hi Steven.

Bad catalog access messages normally indicate that DP's message catalog file is out of date and that an underlying module is sending a message for which no translation is available. The bad catalog access should not cause your operations to fail, but it will hide the underlying problem. My suggestion would be to install the latest Core patches on all hosts involved in this backup - the CS, the DA, the MA and the GUI hosts. This should fix the bad catalog error and let you know the actual problem.

Hello, our company is about to buy disk-based backup solution (10 TB capacity). What would you recommend for Data Protector 6.20? Will this software work with Storeonce 4210 and how?

Thanks.
