Re: Truncate Exchange logs with VEPA backup using Quiescence Snapshot

Not sure why you are getting error code 314 but for to use Exchange integration agent you need to install .net 3.5

If you have decided use Veeam you can ignore it, about your request DP have other features that Veeam backup doesn't have but is not possible truncate logs using VEPA agent.

Best Regards

Hello

In VSS documentation it is written:
...
Using this integration, you can back up the Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 writers. Two writers
are used for Exchange Server 2010 backup and restore:
• Microsoft Exchange Writer (used for active copies)
Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer (used for passive copies)

Also one of possible reasons why you cannot find replication writer, could be reason mentioned in troubleshooting part of VSS documentation:

Problem
After a failover in a DAG occurs, Data Protector reports that some Microsoft Exchange writer
components could not be found:
[Major] From: OB2BAR_VSSBAR@server5.company.com "MSVSSW" Time: 12/7/2009
1:16:40 PM
Failed to find component that would match tree:
'/Microsoft Exchange Replica Writer(Exchange Replication Service)'.

Action
You can solve the issue in two different ways:
• Update the backup specifications to use the correct writers.
• Perform a failover so that the database returns to the original state (active or passive), the
issue will no longer be reported.

Also please remenber thta you can not restore exchange 2010 server after upgrade to exchange 2013 if this is the case.

Might help someone,   One possible cause

On a Linux CM, in the directory /var/opt/omni/server/db80/pg/ was a file
-rw-------. 1 hpdp hpdp 0 Jan 4 12:32 /var/opt/omni/server/db80/pg/backup_label

On the Windows CM, in the directory C:\ProgramData\OmniBack\server\db80\pg was a file
01/06/2016 01:12 PM 0 backup_label

SOLUTION

After deleting the backup_label file in
        /var/opt/omni/server/db80/pg/ - linux CM
        \ProgramData\OmniBack\server\db80\pg - windows CM
it was possible to start the "hpdp-idb" service

What OS is the DP 9.0 Cell Manager?
If the DP 9.0 CM is Windows, try logging on directly on the CM console. Does that work ?
Maybe ECC (Encrypted Control Communication) had been turned on.
You can check by looking at the cell_info file...
     win   ProgramData\OmniBack\Config\Server\cell\cell_info
hostnames with "-encryption 1" have ECC set.

Has the CM hostname got "-encryption 1" set?
What DP patch level is the DP 9.0 CM `omnicheck -patches`?
If running the DP GUI on a different machine than the CM, what patche level is it ?

Problem

A Data Protector Internal DataBase backup fails...

[Normal] From: OB2BAR_POSTGRES_BAR@CM_hostname.co.com "DPIDB"  Time: 30/12/2015 12:59:31
               Completed OB2BAR Backup: CM_hostname.co.com:SMBFs:15 "IDB"
[Warning] From: OB2BAR_POSTGRES_BAR@CM_hostname.co.com "DPIDB"  Time: 30/12/2015 12:59:31
[81:526]               Cannot lock the keystore.
[Critical] From: OB2BAR_POSTGRES_BAR@CM_hostname.co.com "DPIDB"  Time: 30/12/2015 12:59:32
[81:528]               Key Store Database corrupted ==> backup aborted!
Please run omnidbcheck to check database.

One solution that may help solve this problem

- Ensure no Data Protector sessions are in Progress
so `omnistat` says "No currently running sessions".

- Stop DP (`omnisv -stop`)

- if present, delete the "dbcheck.keystore" file.
Windows default location - \ProgramData\OmniBack\tmp

- Start DP (`omnisv -start`)

An alternative problem/solution that may help (if the above does not help)

Sometimes the DP "KMS" service is down:
    rds     : Active  [4188]
    crs     : Active  [4840]
    mmd     : Active  [4236]
    kms     : Down
    uiproxy : Active  [4836]
    omniinet: Active  [4732]
    Sending of traps disabled.

The solution that may help solve this problem

- Ensure no Data Protector sessions are in Progress
so `omnistat` says "No currently running sessions".

- Stop DP (`omnisv -stop`)

- if present, rename the "kms_audit.log" file.
Windows default location - :\ProgramData\OmniBack\log\server\

- Start DP (`omnisv -start`)

This post helps me. http://blog.ifost.org.au/2014/05/how-to-kill-hanging-session.html

The command is:

omnistat -status_only -session R-xx

xx = the session key of the bsm from Task Manager.

Then end task on the hung BSM.

Close and reopen the GUI.

Once you have a window with no backups running run the command:

omnidbutil -clear  ##to set any backups you've had to end with task manager to failed. If any backups are currently running they will also be set to failed.

Credentials for push install of new clients.

This is a two part question, basic stuff....

  1. When adding multiple clients at once, it will ask me for my credentials for each individual client.  Is there a way to enter the credentials only once or is that just the way DP works?
  2. I am using my own admin account to push the client disk agent.  Are my credentials being recorded on the client?  When I have to change my password, is the backup for any client I pushed going to fail?  Or are my credentials only used for the install and that’s the only time they are referenced?

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Can I suspend a session?

Let's say I have a job that has been running for numerous hours and is only half way through the job and I need to patch and reboot the server.  Can I suspend the job so that I don't lose the progress I have made up to that point.?

Thanks,
Randy

Thanks for the reply.  I did confirm with Microsoft that they do make it possible to restore the edb file without having an Exchange 2010 server present.  However, as you alluded to with your information about the writers that are required it appears that HP Data Protector requires an Exchange 2010 server to be present.

Hi Daniel.

As far as I know, it's a question of customer interest. I would recommend reaching out to your HP Enterprise technical contact to discuss your need, so that DP's product management is made aware of your requirement.

Hi.

You can find DP's support matrices under <DP home>\Docs\support_matrices. On Windows, the default location is typically C:\Program Files\OmniBack\Docs\support_matrices. For drives and libraries, the relevant document is Device_SupportMatrix.pdf. Your initial question was unclear since you were calling the Dell TL2000 a drive, when it is actually a library. I don't know which sub-release of DP 9.0 you are using, but it looks like the library was certified with DP 9.05. If your release is lower than that, then an upgrade might help. At the very least, you'll move to a supported combination, which will allow DP support to troubleshoot your setup.

If you are already using DP 9.05, then in all probability this is a driver issue. With HP drives, I would recommend even removing the tape driver and falling back to the generic scsi driver. However, with IBM drives, that's probably not going to work, so just ensuring that you have the latest version should be in order.

Hi Randy,

1. on installation server you can use "omniinetpasswd -inst_srv_user" to add user for installation. It's credentials are then used when installing new clients

2. credentials are stored on installation server only, if you change credentials there would be no impact on already installed clients, you would simply need to modify the user record with "omniinetpasswd -modify" so that you can install new ones.

That's not exactly suspend, but you can just abort the session, once it ends and you are done with maintenance go to Internal database, right click on the session and use "resume session" and it will continue from the spot where it was aborted.

(DP) Support Tip: Data Protector supports now backup of Virtual Machine disks in parallel

Virtual Environment Integration (VEA) agent VMware integration supports backup of Virtual Machine disks in parallel using Data Protector 9.05

Two omnirc varaibles can be used to manage this behavior:

OB2_VEAGENT_THREADED_DISK_BACKUP = 1 (default)
This variable is used to enable/disable the threaded disk backup. By setting to 0, the disk objects are backed up serially.

OB2_VEAGENT_DISK_CONCURRENCY = 10
This variable is used to increase the number of disk parallelism. By default, 9 threads will be run in parallel, with atleast one thread.
