Data Domain File Library Credential Issue

$

Hi All

We have a DP 8.1 Install (Win2012R2) configured to back up to file library devices.

These devices are being presented over CIFS from a Data Domain.

Our backups are consisiently failing .. with a 'Unauthorized access, username or password' incorrect warning in the session messages.

We have confired that the  DD excepts connections from any client, the NTFS permissions look fine, the INET service looks okay ... Are we missing something fundamental here or could anyone offer any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance.

If you want to use more drives in parallel you must either create more objects or reduce the concurreny on the destination device. There is no other option.

Hi PDS_Support,

you should change the Data Protector INET service on the Media Agent to a named account that exist on Data Domain and the Media Server. The best option is to use an Active Directory account for that. If this user can access the share from the Media Agent host you should be ready to go.

Hi Lars,

please share details to the Cell Manager operating system, upgrade path and it you had any issues during the upgrade? When do you see this kind of errors showing up? Please share the complete session report and a recent log from OmniBack\server\db80\pg\pg_log.

In that case, lets read.

The component in Dataprotector A.09.06 its called Automatic Disaster Recovery (ADR), I don't see an Enhanced version

How to use Fiber Channel instead of the network for DP Backups

$

Hi guys.

Still doing some test in our lab. Right now we are looking for a way to do certain backups using the available Fiber channel path intead of our Lan.

In this case our MSL4048 has been connected to our SAN Fabric, Also the backup server is connected here as it has a LUN in the SAN, and last the server to be backed up using the FC is connected to the SAN Fabric too.

What I did was to create a zone in the fabric with the Tape Library and the server to be Backed up as members, so right away the server saw the library, then I've tried the "Client is a Device Server" in the client properties on DataProtector, but still the backup was done using the Lan.

Now I'm wondering if I need to add the Library, and the drive, in the client and then configure this as the library to be use for this backup.

If there's a guide where I can find this please let me know, I couldn't find one or relevant information in google.

Regards

Hi Grimaldy,

you need to deploy the Media Agent component to the client that has access to the library and requires SAN backups. Then configure the MSL4048 and the drives and Multi-Path devices and add the device path for this Media Agent. To have persistent device path on Windows you should define the following registry values.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Tape]
"Persistence"=dword:00000001

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MChgr]
"Persistence"=dword:00000001

In the backup spec, Destination tab select Properties of each drive and choose the right Preferred Multi-Path host. If you're dealing with loads of SAN backups the global option LANfree=1 might help. Device filters are a good option in case you need to do SAN backups on clustered systems.

Hello Sebastien,

So finally we have to zone every node WWPN to the server, to have all the team member online. The strange thing is that on couplet 1 whit one with only one WWPN presented to the server we are able to have a catalyst store whit two member 1 & 2 online and working. This behave not the same on couplet 2, every WWPN have to be presented in order to have a catalyst store with node 3 & 4 online. Just as information there is also an important problem that not should be forgotten, the number device per initiator. I get from the support recommendation to set this to the maximum 64. On Linux this create on the server side 64 generic scsi device per WWPN, now whit 4 node, and if you have two store this create 64 + 8 device, the default maximum device per server is 256. Many thanks for your assistance.

Roland

Hi Sebastian,

i forced my customer to perform an extended check and restart the system.
When i will get an update, i let you know and post the logs.

The cell server is Windows 2008 R2, DP 9.06 - latest patches.
During the update there were no problems.

Kind regards,
Lars

Hi Roland,

thanks for the feedback on this. Increasing device per Initiator is only required for Windows CoFC clients to allow more parallel connections. This is a per client option. I usually recommend 16 to 32 because a single stream will use a single CPU core on the client (regardless of server side or target side dedupe). So this heavily depends on the clients processing power.

Are you able to tell me if all service sets are running on the right node? This would explain why node 1 is able to provide access to service set 2.

I would be happy if you could assign a kudo (or two) and mark this topic as resolved. :)

Hi mainland,

you could check C:\ProgramData\OmniBack\log\AppServer\server.log (on the active node) for possible issues. When saving a backup spec on a Cell Manager running in a Microsoft Failover Cluster the data is written to the Omniback cluster share. Do you have any third party software such as virus scanners that might cause a slow down writing to a share?

Sebastian Koehler

where are you running the GUI from? If this is different to the cell manager, it might be that as it will use its own local settings to resolve hostnames in DP. Try another host to run the GUI.
