Re: Change Media Order on Volume Pool

$

DP will have put them in that order for good reasons.
I'd say
TAE361L5
TAE538L5
TAE093L5
TAE088L5
will have been the last 4 media used. They are not full yet.
The pool will be appendable so DP will load them next time and use them until either
    - they are full
or
    - the backup finishes

DP will have allocated an order value to the other tapes to try to get equal use of them.
DP will use them so they wear out together, rather than some tapes are used a lot ,while others are hardly ever used.

Hope this helps, Stewart

i usualy copy the whole content of the hp-ux install dvd to the client on which i want install DP.

there you have a folder LOCAL_INSTALL in which you find omnisetup.sh. maybe you need to do a chmod +x on the file to have the execute rights...

Stewart is right. you cant use lto-6 tape drive to read lto-3 media. for every lto type you can:

two generations back read tapes

one generation back read and write tapes

so this means in the lto-6 case, you can still read lto4 and lto5 tapes, but you can only write to lto5 tapes.

Data Protector - Support Tip - Error when backing up large Hyper-V installations

Hyper-V VEA backup of VMs on cluster shared volumes (CSV)

During Data Protector VEA backups often messages were observed like the following, especially if several VMs were involved in the backup. Smaller backups of say 5 VM were running fine.
Only if larger number of VMs were involved and these were distributed over several CSV and were accessed via different Hyper-V server the issue could be observed.

Error in session report
-->
[Major] From: OB2BAR_VSSBAR@system.domain "HyperV" Time: 11.10.2012 16:13:52
Cannot perform backup of:
'/Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer/Virtual Machines/Backup Using Child Partition Snapshot\VSAP-BHS301',
which contains data in:
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\VSAP-BHS301\Virtual Machines\7B36324F-E064-4948-AA14-D189EBC32673.xml
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\VSAP-BHS301\Virtual Machines\7B36324F-E064-4948-AA14-D189EBC32673\*
C:\ClusterStorage\Volume2\VSAP-BHS301\VSAP-BHS301_disk_1.vhd
C:\ClusterStorage\volume2\vsap-bhs301\vsap-bhs301_disk_2.vhd

There are two parameters that can help with the problem.

'omnirc' local environment variable: OB2VSS_TIMEOUT
----------------
The timeout has to be set on the Hyper-V servers where vssbar is running (not on the VEAgent host) and that it's long enough.  The default is 180 min

'global' environment variable: CellResourceTimeout
Default is 7200 seconds (2 hours)

Issue was solved by setting
1. on all the 5 VSS hosts, omnirc variable "OB2VSS_TIMEOUT=2880
2. global variable on cell manager "CellResourceTimeout=86400
27 nodes could successfully be backed up up this way.

The 'omnirc' file does not exist by default, it can be created using Notepad and saved in the following location

Program Data -> Omniback -> omnirc

When saving the file, make sure that it has no extension, like 'txt' or 'tmpl'. The Data Protector INET services must be stopped and restarted after creating or editing this file

The 'global' file is found on the cell manager:

          Program Data -> Omniback -> Config -> Server -> Options -> global

After making the edit, save the file, stop and restart Data Protector

Re: DP v7.0 - Restore Oracle DB to different server (Production to Test)

Hi Bob,

Need a little more help with this. I'm beginning to think that I'm missing something obvious here...

I've looked through the Oracle/SAP integration guide, but I can't seem to see any section that deals with restoring to a different servers, other than the option to Duplicate the server. Is this what I should be looking at doing?

I can select the database who's data I want to restore (Production server in this case), then select "Perform RMAN repository restore" and pick the control file from results area. Question is, how do I select the client to restore to (Test server)? Where do I make this selection in the GUI? If I select Production server in the "Source" tab, and select the Test server in the "Options" tab, it just performs a restore of backups made from the Test server, back onto the same Test server. As I'd mentioned before, it seems to ignore the info in the "Source" tab.

In short, how do I select the Production as my source and the Test as my destination? It seems like it should be such a simple thing to do, yet I can't seem to figure out how to do that in the UI.

Install agents on linux client via cli

Hi I need help.

DP 8 CM Linux

To add clients linux, CM demands public-private key pair. Is there a alternate way to install agents
on the client without using this trusted relation ?

Something like using ssh on CM to install the agent with authentication via cli ?

TIA and best regards
Jose

i dont know if you can change this behaviour. but what you could do is to install the DP Client localy on the Server. But this is only a solutsion if you need to install 2-3 clients. If you have many clients, this is not the way to go.

you can use LOCAL_INSTALL\omnisetup.sh script from the intall DVD on the client on which you want to install DP Agents

./omnisetup.sh -server <cellserver.domain.local> -install da

-> does install Disk agent

Maybe a DP Linux speciallist can help here...

Data Protector 6.2 File Backup Using too many tapes

$

Hi,

We're running Data Protector 6.2 on a Windows Server 2008 box and one of the backup jobs is a filesystem backup that backs up a drive on a virtual (vSphere 5) Windows Server 2008 box.  Currently the job is backing up around 2TB of data taking approximately 26 hours and is currently using 6 LTO3 tapes which doesn't seem right somehow.  The backup hardware is an MSL 6000 with two LTO3 drives.  The backup only uses one of them.  I've checked the tape drive it is using and it has hardware compression enabled.

Where else can I look to try and reduce the number of tapes this job uses?

Thanks.

James

Hi James,

LTO3 tape capacity is 400GB (800GB compressed).  Obviously, the compression that you'll achieve will depend upon the type of data that you're backing up.  There will also be a bit of extra data on the tape other than pure data. Five tapes @ 400GB each would provide you with 2TB and I'm guessing that there's not much data on the sixth.

use below commands to resolve this issue

#scsimgr -v -f replace_wwid -C lunpath -I XX
please give scsi id in place of XX

#/usr/bin/scsimgr replace_wwid -D
this has fixed the issue and the devices now shows as claimed again

SuSE NSS 64-bit incremental backup DP 7.0.3

Hi, all,

We ran into a problem backing up SuSE OES 64-bit NSS cluster file system.

The cell manager is Windows 2008 R2, DP 7.03.

The full and incremental backup were both fine, but when doing restore from incremental, the restored files didn't have the changes made between the full and inc backup. There were no errors either duing the restore session.

Any suggestions?

Thank you very much.

Solved...

Problem :  The HP library is unable to find the scsi address from OS end , either the scsi was changed ( or ) the HW / new tape drive was replaced with existing faulty tape drive where the OS is unable to recognized the New HW

Resolution :

issue the “ioscan –fnC tape” to check the tape drives are visible from OS end , you can see some of the tape drives are with “NO_HW” , the OS is not able to recognized the HW ( Hardware ) which is new / replaced.

The SCSIMGR is pointing to the old hardware where the hardware is not existing, we need to replace the WWID ( World wide Identification number ) of newly replace tape drive with existing.

Below error message from syslog.log from location “ /var/adm/syslog “

Below are the new HW paths.

Issue the below command to replace the WWID with target path with instance 11 as shown in above error

scsimgr -f replace_wwid -C lunpath  -I 11

scsimgr -f replace_wwid -C lunpath  -I 12

Re: Email notification issue

On the face, you should be getting the e-mails, but, I need to know if your cell manager is on Windows 2003 or 2008.  Your path is correct for a Windows 2003 cell manager, but for a Windows 2008 cell manager, it would have to be

C:\Program Data\OmniBack\Config\Server\Options\global

if you are using the defaults

IN the 'global' file, is this line

SMTPServer=mail.mydomain.com

uncommented and have the leading 'space' removed?  Does it correctly reflect the SMTP server for sending emails.

Did you check the Application Event log on the cell manager when you tried to e-mail the report?

It appears that I had a leading space. Works perfectly. Thanks.
