How to define a storage pool into Load balanced backup method
Hi
I am really new to HP Data Protector , and currently took over a backup project from ex employee.
We have a device example
MSL001
and it has 2 drive
MSL001_d1
MSL001_d2
and From Backup - > Backup Jon- > Description -> I can see its saying "Load Balanced"
But what I dont undersand, How are you defining a storage pool to a specifiq backup with this "Load Balanced" Method,
to be more specifiq - : I was checking couple of Backup under BAckup Specification -> options -> Select the drive -> click Properties -> Media pool -> No medial pool seclected.
But I can see its going to one of medial pool we have ( currently we have 3 medial pool)
so instead of "no medial pool selected" Hows its going into one of hte medial pool ??
how does media pool work for Load blanced method ??
Hope it make sense.
Thanks for your help
Re: Data Protector v7 restores extremely slow
Update to this problem. After making the following change recommended by HP Support, the time out periods are varying in length. There are still many 50 second pauses between restore writes, but now there are some 10 and 20 second pauses occurring.
Enable tape drive lock down and try restoring from the tape:
# scsimgr set_attr -d estape -a norewind_close_disabled=1

Re: Data Protector - NTFS Journal ¿Problems?
I'm guessing that you're asking about the Change Journal.
"Use native Filesystem Change Log Provider if available.
If this option is selected, the enhanced or conventional incremental backup will be performed using the Windows NTFS Change Log Provider if it is available. In such a case, a Windows Change Journal will be used to generate a list of files that have been modified since the last full backup and a file tree walk will not be performed"
I have tried using this in the past but found that for large file systems the management of the journal was far too cumbersome and I preferred to use the Data Protector in-build log. Unfortunately, this creates thousands of very small files in the install directory of the DP client. Because of the default block size of NTFS (4K) this caused a small DP log to take a large amount of disk space, ie 200MB of log files took up ~1.5GB of disk. So the best idea is to install the DP client on a disk with sufficient space (not C:).
Hope this helps.

Re: How to define a storage pool into Load balanced backup method
Hi,
When a tape drive device is created a default media pool can be selected. After this, when that device is used for a backup the media will be used from the default media pool for the drive. The 'No media pool selected' option in the backup specification means that it's going to use the drive-defined pool but it gives you the opportunity to over-ride this if needed.
The 'Load balancing' is the amount of drives the backup specification will use. By default, whenever a new job is created it will be load balanced and you can choose how many (maximum and minimum) drives will be used for the backup.
The media pools do not define how load balancing works.
Hope this helps,
John
Re: How to define a storage pool into Load balanced backup method
You can use free pool function.
First you need to add free pool, after that go to each volume pool, right click, choose properties. choose Allocation tab on media pool properties, after that check list the "Use Free Pool" option.

Re: Data Protector 6.2 File Backup Using too many tapes
Hi John,
Thanks for your reply.
I take it that this is expected behaviour then? I thought we would get more compression on the backups.
The data is predominately image files.
If I go into the tape properties and look at the data usage does this give an accurate indication of how much data is being stored?
Thanks.
James
Re: How to define a storage pool into Load balanced backup method
Hi
Thanks for the reply,
I can see one of the medial pool is defined "As default media pool" under Seeting of a devices,
So , If i dont want to overriede, it will stat to backup into any devices under that Default Medial pool
With this finding, I have another confusion.
Suppose if i hvae 10 tape in 10 slot , and the backup jobs are Load balanced.
So the backup for example Server -a , can go into Tape 1 or tape2... tape 10
right ??
So now, if i want to restore a data from a old tape ( example today is 19th, I want to restore date from 14th of December , how will i know which tape to restore ??
Thanks for your asnswer
Need some Understanding about Load banalced Backup and Restrong procedure
Hi,
As a new user of DP and took over an existing backup system,
I wanted to clear about hte concept of Load balanced and restrong.
I was reading about load balanced and my understanding is :
if i have a backup job for SErver -1 and if i have 5 tape drive in the backup devices, so the file system (C/ drive, D drive/ ) of that server-1 can go into any tap drive , right ???
if that true.
now if i have restore some old backup, how will know which tape drive look at ??
if my understanding is not right, please correct me .

Re: Data Protector 6.2 File Backup Using too many tapes
well i would say for 2TB of data you would need about 5 Tapes. if it is more than 2TB it can go to 6 but as already have been told, it depends on the data you backup. in dp go to device and media -> media -> pools. then click on the media -> properties -> usage. there you should see how much data is on it if the tape is full.
is write compression enable in data protector?
device and media -> device -> in the properties of the device go to Drives tab and check if the tape address does end with an C. for example tape0:0:1:0C. If so, compression in DP is enabled.
If you have an HP Library or drive, you can use HP Library and Tape tools to enable/disable compression on the tape itself. you can also do some write testings to see if the compression is enabled.
But if you backup already compressed image files, you can not expect big compression with backup.

Remote server need to be added?
Hi,
One of the remote server which needs to be added in to the cell manager.
We have 6.21 cell manager in one of the site. And only one server in a remote site. But the bandwdith with low between this 2 sites.
I have pused the HPDP client from the cell manager server and tried to run the backup. But it is very slow.
Is there any idea, to take this server backup in a faster way.
Thanks,
Abdul.
Re: How to define a storage pool into Load balanced backup method
Hi,
When you define what data you want to restore, DP will indicate which tapes are required.

Re: Installing DP Agent On Linux Using Omnisetup.sh
Hola,
Yo tambien esto instalando el agente en mi servidor manualmente, este ya fue realizado, y estos fueron los que instalo:
OB2-MA-A.07.00-1
OB2-DA-A.07.00-1
OB2-CORE-A.07.00-1
En el momento en que voy a realizar la importación en el Cell Manager me gerena un error:
[12:1625] Import host failed.
The host information cannot be added/updated in the Cell Manager configuration file.
* Please check that the Data Protector services on the Cell Manager computer are running.
* Also check that Data Protector Inet service on the remote computer is running
(use: telnet <remote computer> 5555 to see if the service responds).
* Make sure that the remote client is not already part of another cell.
Afterwards use Data Protector GUI or omnicc -import_host command to manually import
the client to the selected Cell Manager.
* On NetWare make sure Data Protector directory structure is created properly
(check that directory SYS:USR\OMNI\CONFIG\CLIENT exists) or check that
localhost (127.0.0.1) entry exists in SYS:ETC\HOSTS file for servers
not using DNS IP address resolution.
No se si se deba a que instalo el OB2-MA-A.07.00-1, si es así como puedo corregirlo para que me deje importarlo.
Gracias...
JCCR
