Re: Remote server need to be added?

You can try increasing the block size on your device.  You can also set the logging to Log Directories

If you are in a SAN, you can zone your tape device to see thsi server, and back it up locally instead of over the LAN

Check you LAN connections and make sure that you are using Full Duplex instead of AutoNegotiate

However, I think that, in the end, you just have a slow network. and, from a Data Protector perspective, there is really not much you can do about this

I have attached a doc with various things that you can do to speed up performance

Re: Need some Understanding about Load banalced Backup and Restrong procedure

Load Balancing really does not have much to do about this, unless you set a Load Balance MAX=1, to force each object to a different tape drive

What you should be looking at is Concurrency, which is the number of data streams that can be flowing to any one device.  The default is 4.  In your scenario, "file system (C/ drive, D drive/ )" would be 2 data streams, which would not even meet the minimum concurrency of 1 drive, so, all the other drives would be sitting there waiting

Most modern tape drives (LTO4 and above) can easily handle a concurrency of 10 or more

What Load Balancing will give you is that DP will use any of the drives selected... but, only that one drive

When doing a Restore, DP will always use the device used for backup, by default.  If you want to select a different drive, there is a tab in the Restore context named 'Change device'

I really don't know what to tell you about this.  You can get a listing of the files backed u, which will include the latest change version, I think, but DP does nothing to actually change teh file

Hi Geeks, We had our backups done then an object copy is done to another external drive for our backups residing on another location incase something happens on the original backups. Now, we had an issue earlier which I really need to restore from the copy on the external drive but problem is Im just new to this and now Im stuck as hell not knowing how to restore from it.. I've tried attempts but to no avail.

Please any advise from here on how to carry out the restore from copy.

Many Thanks

well if you have a really slow connection, you could try to go for storeonce store and do deduplicated backups. you can from time to time do a full backup between those fulls, you could do source side deduplication to only send deduplicated data back to the storeonce store. but this requires advacend backup to disk licenses

what for a wan connection do you have between those two sides?

what is the error message you get? can you post a session log?

is the copy session still protected (catalog protection) or is it expired. the copy session also needs to be protected to restore from...

it looks like the installation on the client was successfull. "just" import into the cell server did not work. so you can try to import the client from cell server (open dp gui, clients -> import client).

name resolution has to work in dp environment between cell server and client

Do you have a UNIX-based installation server installed?  Looking at this thread, I get the feeling that you don't

Remove installation is done one of 2 ways:

Using remote access commands, for example

rlogin

rexec

rcp

Using Secure Shell (SSH)

If you are going to use SSH, you need to enable it in the file

            /opt/omni/.omnirc

on the Installation server.  This file does not exist by default, so you can use the UNIX command

         touch /opt/omni/.omnirc

Once the file is created, or, if it already exists,  add this line

OB2_SSH_ENABLED=1

Save the file

How to keep session masseges (Backup & Restore) in DP IDB for specific days

Hi experts!

I need to keep all DP session logs for 365 days, can anyone help me for doing this and also suggest the space required for implementing the same.

Thanks in advance

Hi Chanchal,

The way to keep all session messages is to make the protection of every backup permanent.  However, this would mean that your IDB gets extremely large and quite cumbersome to backup/restore.

Why do you need to do this?  There is an auditing feature that you can find under the Internal database section which may help you achieve what you need.

Hope this helps.

John

I agree with John about setting the protection, however, you can leave the Data Protection (which includes messages) as Permanent, or 52 weeks, but set your catalog protection to a quite lower value, lets say, for the sake of argument, 30 days

When Catalog protection expires, Daily Maintenance will delete the catalog, which takes up the most space, but leave Data information behind

I worry about your media in this case, because that is all going to have to be protected too.  Are you looking to save EVERY message from every session, just errors, or a summary of your backups?  There are a few reporting commands that you can run if you don't necessarily need to save everything

Hi,

If I chose to restore the whole folder, then the inc. backup version was available for restore. But if I only chose the file under the folder, then the inc. backup version was not available.

However, if chose to restore the whole folder from the inc. backup, the file under the folder that was modified between the full and inc backup would not be restored to reflect the modification.

Very strange.  The 32-bit works fine, but the 64-bit has the above problems.

Thank you.

Hi John/ Team

As I know we can keep all messages even those are obsolete by making some changes in C:\Program Files\OmniBack\Config\Server\Options\global file in below section

# KeepObsoleteSessions=NumberOfDays

# default: 30
# This global option controls how many days obsolete sessions
# (restore sessions, backup sessions which never had any valid
# media, and media management sessions) are kept in the database.

# KeepMessages=NumberOfDays

# default: 0
# This global option controls how many days the session messages
# are kept in the database (if the session is not obsoleted and
# removed sooner). If the value is 0 then the session message
# are not removed before session.

But I don't know what will be the impact if I change this parameters.

For audit point of view we've to keep messages for 365 days that's what.
Pls let me know in detail if you've any solution.

Hi
Can you send me the detail error message and whatever command u hv executed ?

Also mention CM server: Windows/Linux

Re: Data Protector - try to add new client

Hi
1. If firewall is on in your linux box then u hv to create a firewall rule to allow instruction on 5555 port.

2. host file entry should be correct on both CM & this client(linux) and vice-varsa.

3. /etc/services file should contain below line:
omni 5555/tcp # DATA-PROTECTOR

4. Telnet the client server with default port of DP ( 5555 ) to check the DP services are able to telnet from 5555 port

# telnet <from CM<->client> 5555

Finally try to push DP client (here Linux) from CM through installation server.

If you face any further issue then pls send me the detail error message with your activity.

hi,
Please follow the steps suggested by Chanchal haldar for basic step wise trouble shooting . and please mention the O.S of your CM. if your CM is also linux then you can follow the steps of Chanchal .. otherwise you have to go for manual installation on client and import it to cell manager.

hi,
please share the details of steps you have gone through..
and try to go through following steps.
1. install CORE,DA, MA packages on client.
2. make entry of CM on client and vice versa.
3. check name resolution from both side (ping via hostname).
3 check in /etc/services whether Port 5555 is free or not, normally it is used by system personal agent-- if already in use then mark it as #.
4. make one entry in /etc/services --- omni tcp/5555 #Data protecor.
5. check telnet on port 5555 from CM to client and vice -versa.
6. now import host if all above steps are working fine.

all the best.

Hi, chancal
i can understand your requirement.
i have same requirement like you but for 90 days only.
any way if you want to go with global option then you need huge space in your IDB. (its normal size is 2 GB).
what i will suggest you that--- configure reporting for all session messages on your mail and save somewhare else from mail.
once you got the reports on mails you can convert it to PDF also and save it date wise.
