I am not going to be able to give you any information on Powerpath, that is not my area of expertise.  However, if it is possible to turn this off temporarily, it may give you a cluse as to it perhaps causing a problem

Similiarly, I know that Persistent BInding can be enabled, but, I don't know how it is done

=======

One more observation is we can see that all clients are configured in hp msl g3 ROBOTICS properties.

Is it necessary to configure all clients ?

Or it must contain only one CM entry in it ?

You can configure as many systems as you want to control the robotics, and using the Data Protector MultiPath functionality

Having said that, I don't think that it is a good idea, and I am kind of old-school about this.  My thought is that you just configure the robotics on a single system, if that system happens tgo go down, then it is easy enough to re-configure

The drives are a different matter, since backup up over the LAN instead of locally (or over teh SAN) will adversely affect your backup performance

Was this working before you installed PowerPath?  This is the 2nd time in 3 days where is handled an issue where it looks like PowerPath is affecting Data Protector, with pretty much the same symptoms

Re: Oracle and TSPITR with DP V8.0

The documentation does not give a specific way to Restore a tablespace, just this:

To restore tablespaces and datafiles:

1. Open a command line window and enter the following commands if you have the database

in the

Open state:

sqlplus /nolog

SQL>connect

user/password@service as sysdba;

SQL>alter database datafile '

datafile name' offline;

If you are restoring a tablespace enter:

SQL>alter tablespace

tablespace_name offline;

2. When the restore has been completed put the datafiles and tablespaces back online with the

following procedures:

Open a command line window and enter the following commands:

sqlplus /nolog

SQL>connect

user/password@service as sysdba

If you are restoring a datafile enter:

SQL>alter database datafile '

datafile_name' online;

If you are restoring a tablespace enter:

SQL>alter tablespace

tablespace_name online;

===============

I found this in the KNowledgebase

Unfortuneatly, this is a limitation of the usage of the GUI  (Oracle-Restore context) funtionality. For the current version
of Data Protector, TSPITR is not supported with the GUI.

To perform TSPITR, the RMAN interface has to be used instead.
This limitation is documented in the Release Notes:

    3.7    Limitations on Database Integrations
    3.7.1  Oracle Limitations

              ...

            • When restoring tablespaces to point in time the
RMAN interface has to be used.

There were no lab cases that address this, so, unfortunately, there is no way to do this from the gUI

Thank you for your reply Bob.

Like I said, I dont have a license for Catalyst stores, only the StoreOnce core functionality. Is thera any way to achieve the intelligent data transfer with StoreOnce software deduplication alone?

Anything I could tell you would be out of that document that I sent to you yesterday, so, I would have to answer your question 'No', unless you find something I missed

Data Protector will sometimes issue Emergency licenses, good for a few weeks,  so that you can test something.  I don't know if Catalyst will do the same, but, I think it is worth opening a case with them and asking

Data Protector StoreOnce Soft Quota

We are trying to set up a soft quota warnings on our storeonce backup systems through data protector.

It shows the warning in the backups jobs

[Warning] From: BMA@Server"stotre [GW 9500:4:2680583120647979075]" Time: 3/18/2014 8:27:46 AM
The StoreOnce store "Store" on server "172.30.11.19"
exceeded the quota of 5 GB for the size on disk by approx. 9 GB !

These errors do not show up in the DP event log.  Any ideas where these logs are reported other then in the backup job?

Data Protector :: Configuration (System Steate) Backup is needed?

Hi All,

What happed if configuration is not backed up?

Can I do a disaster recovery restore?

What is an concern?

Please suggest, Thanks.

Re: Data Protector StoreOnce Soft Quota

I looked at lab cases, at the KNowledgebase, and at the StoreOnce documentation, and found nothing that even mentioned a quota.  Therefore, I have nothing.  Perhaps one of the other folks on the Forum has seen this.

My first thought was that it has something to do with the maximum file size in your DP File library, which is set, by default, to 5GB. You can try changing that value to see if it changes the error

In Devices and media, expand Devices.  Find your File Library, right-click on it, go to Properties

You will see at least one directory there, click it to highlight, and pick Properties.  You will see what is in the attachment.  The Maximum Size can be set from 0.1GB to 2000GB, with the default value being 5GB, the recommended size.  You can try increasing this to 7 or 8GB, run your backup again to see if it changes anything

What happed if configuration is not backed up?

-----

Everything else gets backed up.  Here is what will not be backed up

The special data structures maintained by the Windows operating system are not treated as a part of the filesystem backup. Data Protector lets you back up a special data structure known as CONFIGURATION.

To perform a configuration backup, select the object CONFIGURATION or just parts of it when creating a filesystem backup specification. Event Logs, Profiles, and User Disk Quotas are always backed up if CONFIGURATION is selected in the Backup wizard.

On Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 systems, CONFIGURATION backup is performed using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Limitations
Only one CONFIGURATION backup can run on a system at a time.

Active Directory Service and SysVol should be backed up in pair.

Windows configuration objects
Active Directory Service

Certificate Server

COM+ Class Registration Database (ComPlusDatabase)

DFS

DHCP

DNS Server

EISA Utility Partition

Event Logs

File Replication Service

IIS

Profiles (Documents and Settings)

Registry

Removable Storage Management Database

SystemRecoveryData

SysVol

Terminal Service Database

User Disk Quotas (QuotaInformation)

WINS

CONFIGURATION differs between Windows systems.

For some objects, special points have to be considered. These are listed in the sections below.

Active Directory

DFS

DHCP and WINS

Profiles

Removable Storage Management Database

Terminal Service Database

Windows services

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Active Directory
When backing up the Active Directory service, the File Replication Service (FRS) and Distributed File System (DFS) also get backed up. All configuration information about replicated files and distributed files is stored in the Active Directory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DFS
Data Protector backs up Windows Distributed File System (DFS) as part of one of the following:

Windows Registry, if the DFS is configured in a standalone mode

Windows Active Directory, if the DFS is configured in a domain mode

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DHCP and WINS
When Data Protector backs up DHCP and/or WINS databases, the respective service is stopped and then restarted after the database is backed up. It is recommended to schedule the backup of the CONFIGURATION of a server that is running DHCP and/or WINS service during off hours.

DHCP and WINS services also provide their own internal backup copies of their databases. If your environment cannot tolerate occasional shutdowns of these services, you can exclude them from Data Protector CONFIGURATION backups and back up the internal backup copy of the databases via filesystem backup. For details about location of the internal backup copies and how to ensure that these copies are made frequently enough, see the Microsoft MSDN documentation.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Profiles
If the entire system is selected for backup, “Profiles” is backed up twice, (once as a part of filesystem backup and once as a part of CONFIGURATION). To avoid this, exclude the profile data from the filesystem backup. The user profile data resides in the c:\Documents and Settings directory:

These directories contain all user profiles configured on the system and are backed up by Data Protector. If a system is configured for multiple users, each defined user has a separate user profile. For example, the All Users and the Default User profile contain the profile components common to all defined users and the profile components assigned to a newly created user.

Data Protector reads the location of the profiles from the following Registry keys:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\\

CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

(where information about common profile components resides)

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\\

CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Removable Storage Management Database
On Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating systems, to enable backup of the Removable Storage Management Database configuration object, ensure that Removable Storage Manager is installed on the system which will be backed up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Terminal Service Database
On Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 operating systems, to enable backup of the Terminal Service Database configuration object, ensure that the Terminal Server Licensing service is installed on the system which will be backed up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows services
Backing up the Windows services means backing up the data structures used by the respective services. A particular database is exported (dumped) into a file that is then backed up. The Windows services are always backed up if CONFIGURATION is selected in the Backup wizard.

A Windows service has to be up and running so that Data Protector can detect it and present it as a selectable item in the Backup wizard. If a service is not running at the backup time, the corresponding backup object will fail.

To back up one of the services, select the corresponding folder under CONFIGURATION. If you use Active Directory to publish Certificate revocation lists (CRLs), for example, back up the Active Directory services along with the Certificate Server.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can I do a disaster recovery restore?

---

No

Now, having said this, I don't think that it is necessary to backup /CONFIGURATION every day, because, for the most part, it does not change on a daily basis.  Maybe once a week or so, that will depend on your business needs

I would suggest that, in the GUI, you click Help -> Help Topics, and search for "configuration object", including the " marks, for additional information

Re: Oracle and TSPITR with DP V8.0

OK  your scenario is not a TSPITR only a restore of datafile without recover until .

I think the solution is to create a database restore as copy and run de recover until on this copy, next, expdp of the tablespace   next impdp on the main database.

So DP is only use to restore an old copy of the database.

I'll try this scenario.

Thanks

But what is strange that on 6.20 version there were no errors like these.

Maybe it is because of new DP version?

DP - Support Tip - DP 8.1 'hpdp-idb' service will not start

Problem:

After updating to DP 8.1, the hpdp-idb service does not start:

If, prior to the DP 8.1 upgrade, DP 7 or 8.0 had all files in a common directory, for example

C:\Program Files\OmniBack

or

D:\DataProtector

We have found that the update to DP 8.1 creates a file "C:\Program" and does not clean it up after the installation, even it has been successfully.

It looks like this file is only left over in case of updating DP installations that utilize a common directory.

Look for the folder '\Program' and delete it for example

C:\Program

or

E:\Program

After the media is expired using this procedure, is there a way to automatically remove the session from the internal database.  Or is this a manual step?

thanks.

Re: Removing old backup jobs from backup to disk destination

When the media is re-used or exported, the corresponding sessions that were written to that media will be deleted.  The next 'writedb/readdb' will also remove the sessions

I'm trying to deploy Storeonce VSA with enterprise manager .

It always fails in the "fetching deploiment data" , it does not even start deploying , with an "exception" ( no error mentioned )

Has anyone had the same issue ?

thanks

Re: Removing old backup jobs from backup to disk destination

i still see the sessions in the list.  however i don't see the content from these available for restore, so i'm pretty sure that part is working.

This is a backup to disk device, so it doesn't re-use the media in the same way.  Could this be the issue?

The errors that you indicate may indicate IDB corruption, but a lot of these inconsistency problems were resolved with the 8.01 patch bundle.  I can only go by what I see, so, I don't know if you have this installed or not

There was also a possible solution found for this problem

" hpdp-idb    : Down"

I wrote a support tip on this earlier today, but the short version is to look for a folder named \Program, and if you find it, then delete it
