Re: online backup error

I went through several lab cases that reported this error, but, unfortunately, found nothing useful, they were all closed without resolution

Re: DP8.0 GUI slow respond.

Slow response from the gUI is almost always either

   -  MUltiple DP processes running

   -  some other process other than DP is tying up a lot of CPU cycles

   -  IDB may be highly fragmented

Check to see what DP processes are running by stopping DP, and

HPUX:

     ps -ef | grep omni

Kill any processes still running

Windows

Start Task Manager, get a list of running processes.  Look especially for any

bsm

rsm

csm

msm

asm

dbsm

manager

If you see any of these, then, kill them

===============

At the command prompt on the cell maanger, run

      omnidbutil -info

The ratio of Records Used vs Records Total in the Catalog part of the report should be as close to 100% as possible, certainly, no lower than 92-93%

Re: Data Protector 6.10 backups interfering with Microsoft SQL Full and Differential backups

Good Day Andrew

If i get you right, you are using HP Data Protector 6.10 and you have a client you backup on which Windows Server 2012 is running? Please be aware that DP 6.10 is not supported to backup windows server 2012 System.

1. if you enable the vss writer option during file system backup, dp does trigger the vss writers on the client. as far as i know this does result in accessing vss writers for sql, exchange and so one

2. you could disable vss for the file system backup, but normaly it is needed for dr purposes.

-> go to the file system backup from the sql server, in the tab "backup object summary" select the client, go to properties and check und "winfs options" if vss is selected. if yes, this would explain why sql vss writer is triggered during file system backup

Checked on a 2008 r2 Server system with SQL 2008 and DP 7.03. File System VSS option is activated. If you look at the dp session log from the drive on which the sql db resiedes, you can see vss entries for sql db backup. if you open sql server management studio, go to a db -> tasks -> restore -> restore files and file groups you can see all the backups taken. there you would notice also backups from dp. they should have status "copy only". this backup type does not interference with the full/trn backup you do with the sql maintenance plans.

'Invalid format of detail catalog binary file' after import

$

Hello.

I recently needed to import a number of tapes after our log file became full and the remainder of our last full backup was switched to no logging. Under the advice of a co-worker, I created four new dcbf folders and four new DAT files with the intention of our catalog not becoming full again so soon. All media was successfully imported (Import Catalog), but upon opening Data Protector manager, I recieve the error 'Invalid format of detail catalog binary file'. When browsing filesystem backups for restore, I also notice that most items (directories and files) have quadruple duplicates which certainly wasn't the case before the import. Omnidbcheck -quick reports everything is OK.

Can anyone offer any advice on this one? My apologies if my explantion is vague or doesn't make much sense.

Matt

Hi

Yes server has been rebooted upon the DP agent reinstallation.

Yes Cell server can telnet to port 3389 to the problem server.

I want to try one thing, which is to change the IP of the server within the same IP range, and see if Cell can telnet.

Hi All,

Controlfile restoration is not working through the DP GUI.But same is working through the command line

/opt/omni/lbin/ob2rman.pl -restore_controlfile -session <session ID>

We tried the both GUI option

Data Protector 8.1 clean install database options

Hi, I am about to set up a new Data protector server using the latest version 8.1 on a Windows based server, in the past we have always used the default options and let data protector use its own database,

the question is is it possible to use MS-SQL instead as we would like to write some of our own custom reports to check for errors, servers that are not being backed up etc, using SQL would make it much easier for us.

Thank you very much for the info, I see complicated because the server name and IP are different. Everything is studying.

Another thing that I see, is a procedure for installing DP Cell Manager and install 7 manager on an HP-UX cluster, which is my case.

Is there a specific procedure for this?.
Just read that I have to deifinir primary and secondary cell, but does not say how.

thanks

What version of Data Protector are you running?

What is the OS-type and version of the Cell Manager?

Can you provide an example of this:

"...I also notice that most items (directories and files) have quadruple duplicates..."

I understand what is meant by 'Created new DCBF directories", but what is meant by this  "...  four new DAT files.."

"... is is it possible to use MS-SQL..."

No.  DP 8.x uses 'postreSQL', and I don't know how compatable it is with MS-SQL, but, you couldn't use MS_SQL as teh IDB database regardless

Hi,

as your real request is to have some better reports... wait for 8.11 to be released next week. This will not include a better reporting, however, with the launch of 8.11 the new software HP Data Protector Management Pack (using MS SCOM) is launched. As I was involved (I polled for required reports and displayed some screenshots on my website) during the development and know how it will look like, I can assure this will be great stuff and I think you will become satisfied with the included reports.

Best regards

Daniel

What version of Data Protector are you running?

What is the OS-type and version of the Cell Manager?
Version 07.00 Build 103. OS Server 2008 R2. Cell manager I'm unsure of. Please see attached screenshot of duplicate directories.

Can you provide an example of this:

"...I also notice that most items (directories and files) have quadruple duplicates..."

Please see attached screen shot.

I understand what is meant by 'Created new DCBF directories", but what is meant by this  "...  four new DAT files.."
Please also see attached screen shot.

I've run an omnidbcheck -extended overnight which produced the following results:

===================================================

Core -core OK
Filenames -filenames OK
DCBF(presence and size) -bf OK
SIBF(readability) -sibf OK

OMNIDC(consistency) -dc Corrupted: 25 major errors detected
DONE!

OK, so you are adding 'fnames.dat' files... good enough

The other screenshot  was for an Restore.  I see what you are saying about the Quads

I'd like for you to change the search Interval (which has been know to cause some problems) to None.  Then, pick any of the Quads, say 'Admin' for example, put a check mark for the first one in line, right-click on it, and pick Version.  Click the down-arrow next to the Data window, and take a screen shot

Uncheck the first Admin, and check the 2nd one, repeat the process, until you have 4 screenshots, and send them along

I am trying to see if they are legitimate Restore Objects

Re: 'Invalid format of detail catalog binary file' after import

Before I even get to posting the screenshot, let me explain this interesting behaviour. When I attempt to check the first 'Admin' folder, the third becomes checked. When I attempt to check the second 'Admin' folder, the fourth becomes checked.

As if that isn't enough, when I first click on the restore object to display the quadrupled contents with the search interval at the default of 'Last 3 months', the quadrupled folders are displayed. When I change the search interval to 'None', the duplicates disappear and only a single instance is displayed. THEN, when I select a different restore object, revert the search interval back to 'Last 3 months', and then go back to the previous restore object, the quadrupled contents are not visible as before. Confusing I know. It is as if the quadrupled folders are only displayed the first time the backup object is selected upon opening DP Manager with the 'Last 3 months' search interval.

Would a purge be effective in this situation?
