SQL Restore to different instance and file paths

$

Hi,

We have a SQL system which is backed up on a nightly basis and i'm trying to make a script which will use the omnir command to restore this backup to another SQL host.  The destination host is running a different named instance of SQL and the paths for the files are also different.

The current command i've built looks like this:

omnir -mssql -barhost sql-source.contoso.com -destination sql-dest.contoso.com -destinstance SQL2008R2 -base Logihold -replace -file LogiholdDotNet "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL2008R2\MSSQL\DATA\Logihold_Data.mdf" -file LogiholdDotNet_log "E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL2008R2\MSSQL\DATA\Logihold_log.ldf" -file ftrow_LogiholdDotNetFT "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL2008R2\MSSQL\DATA\Logihold_ftrow.ndf" -file SerticaDocumentFileStream "D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL2008R2\MSSQL\DATA\Logihold_FileStream" -session 2014/03/25-0524

Unfortunately running this command results in the following error:

[Critical] From: OB2BAR_SQLBAR@sql-dest.contoso.com "SQL2008R2" Time: 2
7-03-2014 10:16:40
There are no objects in the Data Protector Internal Database for object
'Logihold'.

I've used the omnidb command to verify the object name and it is correct.  We also test restored to another location with no issues and right now it's looking like the issue is to do with us restoring to a named instance which differs from the original location.  Surely this isn't the case?

Can anyone make any suggestions on this one please?

Many thanks

Pete

Full backup information is "forgotten"

Hi all,

I have ran into a strange issue with DP 7.01.

I am doing full + incremental backups using the same datalist. 1 full / week, rest of the days running in incremental mode.

I noticed that when I try to restore a folder it requests 50+ tapes as it is reverting to one full backup from January and adds all the incrementals on top of that. Full backups run fine every week, still it reffering to the old January backup.

Full backup is very slow - one ~ 4TB dynamic disk.

Some details:

Cell server - win2003, DP7.01

Client - win2008, DP7.01

Backup goes directly to magnetic tape, no copy session.

Are there some settings to be done specially for dynamic disks backups?

Thanks for any reply.

I just noticed, there is another dynamic disk there ~ 2TB. Backups are fine for this one.

Also, there is just one object name for the disk that has the restore issue.

While I think that this is more of a GUI problem, I agree that it may be with the IDB, and that a purge of the IDB certainly not hurt, although, I always advise that you stop DP and make a copy of 'db40' before doing anything to the IDB

"Does this mean I have to install Media agent on server2 and then use that server as a gateway?"

Yes

In the StoreOnce integration Guide

http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/document/KM00452416?searchIdentifier=7708fbc5%3a145021f62ce%3a-c8b&resultType=document&documentURL=KM00452416&resultsURL=%2fselfsolve%2fmanuals&allowReturn=true&searchString=&searchKey=

it says:

Backup to Disk (B2D) devices must be configured to access pre-defined gateways. A gateway, or rather a

gateway client, is a client with the Media Agent component installed (the client must be a 64-bit system, see below). It can be backed up as with any other client in the cell.

Looking at the SQL Integration Guide for DP 7, at Figure 19, I can see where you are given tyhe option to restore to a different server, and restore to a differnet instance, so, it should be possible to do the same restore from the command line

On pg 40, it states these requirements:

Restoring to a different SQL Server instance or/and different SQL Server

Prerequisites

Both SQL Servers must have the same local settings (code page and sort order). This information

is displayed in the session monitor for each backup.

The target SQL Server must be configured and reside in the same Data Protector cell as the

original SQL Server

Looking at the CLI documentation in the Integration Guide, one thing that I am seeing that I am not seeing in your command is "-instance SourceInstanceName", although it is in square brackets [   ] which means it is optional

The SourceInstanceName is case-sensitive; it has to be the same as the name of the SQL

Server instance that you specified in the backup specification

It may be useful here to see the 'detail' output of the backup to be sure that everything si correct

    omnidb -session  2014/03/25-0524 -detail > 25-0254_detail.txt

I am also starting to wonder if that leading '0' in the session ID '0524' might have something to do with this, because teh 'omnir' command is so syntax-senstive

Do you have the Linux cluster installed as such within Data Protector?  Is it a MC/Serviceguard cluster? This involves installing the DB2 component on each physical node in the cluster, then, importing the Virtual Name.  The procedure for this is in the Installation and Licensing Guide

However, looking at the DB2 Integration Guide, I did not see any provisions for being in a cluster.  You can try inporting the Virtual cluster name, and using that as the hostname of the DB2 integration,, but, I see a real chance that you may need to back the cluster nodes up individually

Thank you for the response.

I am trying to add the backup to disk device after installing the media agent. The steps I am following are:

1.  Right click Devices and add device.

2. Device Name - Testbackup, Device Type - backup to disk, Interface type - StoreOnce software deduplication...Next

Server2 was populated in the gateway dropdown menu. So I chose it as a gateway. However, in the "Store" field Server2 is not listed as Deduplication System. It listes the Cell Manager in the drop down menu. Since Server1 would be responsible for deduplication, I chose Server1 there.

But I want to dump the backup data to the storage on Server2, and not sure how to specify the location? Creating a store with Server1 as the Deduplication System will create the store locally in Server1.

I think what you may be missing is on pg 20, 'Creating a Store', which starts like this

Creating a store

Before creating a store, make sure the root directory of the stores has been configured and the physical storage disks (LUN devices) are formatted and mounted on the StoreOnce Software deduplication system. The LUN devices may be on local disks or a disk array (SCSI or Fiber Channel interface) or on a NAS device in the same LAN (iSCSI interface). When using iSCSI interface, the reliable network connection must provide a latency of at most 2 ms and a throughput of at least 1 Gbit/s.

A store can be created from:

The GUI: Follow the procedure for adding a device and when prompted, specify the name of the store (see below for details).

The CLI: Use the command

StoreOnceSoftware --create_store (see Appendix A: StoreOnceSoftware utility for details).

Hello everyone,

We're suddenly getting this error now on a few oracle database jobs in DP(but others are ok) that have been working for years.  I checked and verified the username/password and they are still ok so that is not the issue yet DP thinks it is.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Dave
