a) do you have any errors during the backup, either in session messages or debug.log file on media agent host? 

b) if not is the media shown as poor right away after backup session or you motice it happened after some time interval? 

c) is this happenning with some specific medium, or you observer this with each one you've tried? 

d) can you provide outputs for the pool conatining poor medium: 

  • omnimm -show_pools <PoolName>  -detail
  • omnimm -list_pool <PoolName> -detail

so this happens only when you use "Restart failed objects" option? Normal backup sessions work fine?  What's logged in debug.log file at the time of session report error?

DP TIP: IDB DR Procedure for unix DP 9.0x

Pre-requisites:
1. Daily IDB backup and make sure what will be the tape used for the IDB backup.
2. Backup the file OBrindex.dat using filesystem or a physical copy of the file.
3. Run and test the procedure everytime that you change patches.
IDB Recovery:
1. Re-install DP with the same version that the backup of the IDB is, make sure that you have the same patches.
2. Configure the library
3. Import the tape that contains the file OBrindex.dat
4. Restore the file Obrindex.dat to a temporary directory.
5. Move the file Obrindex.dat from the temporary directory to the directory /var/opt/omni/server/db80/logfiles/rlog
6. Rename the directory /var/opt/omni/server/db80/pg/pg_xlog to pg_xlog.old
7. Run the command “omniofflr –idb –autorecover -force”
8. If you used links at the OS level, make sure that the links are still there after the recovery:
 Example:
  /var/opt/omni --> /dataprotector/var/opt/omni
  /etc/opt/omni --> /dataprotector/etc/opt/omni
9. if the links are not there you can run the following command to recreate it:
 Example:
  Ln –s /dataprotector/var/opt/omni omni (into the directory /var/opt/)
  Ln –s /dataprotector/etc/opt/omni omni (into the directory /etc/opt/)
10. Make sure that the services are up and running correctly “omnisv –status”
11. Open the GUI to make sure that everything is accesing and you can access the IDB with the latest information.

***test this procedure before you have a real idb down.

Inadvertantly not enabled disk-based encryption for months - what options do I have?

Hi all,

We've been running DP for a while without issues, but it came to light recently that we've not had disk-based encryption enabled due to a missed tickbox. As a result, we have ~50 unencrypted tapes in vault storage, which is a bit bad.

What options are availble to us in order to make these tapes unreadable to someone who might procure them maliciously? The obvious process would be to have 2 x drives in a library, set one device as the source, and run object copies on them to another tape in the other drive, repeated x ~50 times. The big issue here is that we only have a single tape drive in our one library. Is there any alternative to this very undesirable option?

I have same issue on IE as well, we have 9.06 in our environment. Do we have any workaround for this?

Are you sure it is keeping your Pool condition setting? We have this issue with our 9.08 install, the media pools cannot be changed from the default 36 month Condition setting so any tapes that were formatted 3 years ago will fail if placed in a pool like this. Some of our pools are respecting the settings I want and the tapes will be fine.

I've started just reformatting tapes that expire and are marked poor to reset this condition.

I opened a support case and was told it wasn't production impacting so they refused to open a backline case to get a fix created.

I'm hoping they fixed it with the 9.08_113 patches but my 2nd CM had errors during upgrades that prevents tape drives from working so I can't upgrade until that is resolved with support.

 

Data Protect 9, Pre-Execution variable for HOST

Hi,

Is there a variable for host. The name of the server being backed up?

I have created a script to restart OmniInet service before the backup job starts, to try and get around the insesent "Disk Agent" and similar errors. Ironically, if I try and run the restart script from the host, often I find Inet is too sick to even run the pre-exec script and the job fails. Chicken and egg!

So I want to run the pre-exec script from the cell manager, however I will need to be able to pass the script the name of the host, so I can restart Inet remotely. The only list of variables that I can find is here, which pertains to DP 8. Surely, there's got to be a way. Does anyone have any suggestions?

IDB service not running

Hi Team 

I use HP DP version 9 , and IDB service not running i try several times to start it without any responce , and the cell manager can't reach the internal DB at all

what's the exact IE version you are using? 

DP 9.04 - all media marked non resident on backup-to-disk device

Hi all,

two days ago suddelny all media on our DataDomain Storage Unit (backup-to-disk) were unavailable for restore because DP says they are non resident.

But the media files on den DataDomain are still there only DP did not know it.
Is it possible to tell DP to rescan the Storage Unit, like a barcode scan on tapes?
New backups work correct, media shows up resident.

I am not quite sure if this is normal but the Media ID in DP differs from the filename on the DataDomain,
the filename is part of the Location Info in DP.

Location: [DataDomain01: 0336abc1_58c9eaab_157c_0002]

Hi Experts,

I own "HP Data Vault X310". But unfortunately, I have lost the DVD that came with it. When I am trying to download the DVD from HP's website, it says it requires a valid support contract. 

Can somebody guide me how to download the software?
